What is Slap Cancer?

Slap Cancer was inspired by one of our favorite accessories: the slap bracelet. We want to ultimately cure cancer and think we should slap the hell out of it! ”Slap Cancer Save Lives” was Brianna Haag’s 10-week fundraising campaign for the 2012 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Woman of the Year. She won, and also set a chapter fundraising record! Throughout the 10 week competition (March 29 – June 9) the team hosted a variety of events to raise over $207k, an amount that will fund 4 blood cancer researchers for an entire year.

 

What happens to “Slap Cancer” now that the competition is over?

Although the 10 week fundraising challenge is done, the Slap Cancer team will continue to fundraise for LLS  throughout the year and continue the legacy of the annual Mr. Marina Competition. If you’re interested in affiliating Slap Cancer with your event, please contact us on the Contact Us tab!

How did they do it?

Events are a great way to bring people together around a cause and achieve fundraising success in the process. Our team planned to meet and exceed our goal by actively managing our ticket sales on our ticketing platform Eventbrite. What is MWOY?

Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) began in San Francisco 22 years ago! And since the campaign’s inception, over 3.4 million dollars has been raised through MWOY for the LLS mission.

Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s “Man & Woman of the Year” titles, by raising funds for blood cancer research. The candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar counts as one vote, and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of ten weeks; the top local fundraisers in the country win the national titles.

Man & Woman candidates are goal-oriented and compassionate. Their relentless efforts are focused on making life better for hundreds of thousands of patients battling blood cancers: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Funds raised by Man & Woman of the Year participants are used for:

  •        Lifesaving blood cancer research
  •        Financial assistance to cover patient expenses for transportation, medication and testing
  •        Free educational materials and events for patients and their families
  •        Local programs such as Family Support Groups and First Connection, a peer-to-peer counseling program
  •        Comprehensive, personalized assistance through our Information Resource Center
